Do Not Be Reasonable: On Climate Action

George Bernard Shaw once said: “All progress depends on not being reasonable”. The planet needs unreasonableness for climate action from every angle, and it needs it now.

I sometimes feel it in me, when my friends throw cigarette buds in a sewer or me opening plastic from the stores to get my groceries into my fridge.

I am getting into an anxiety-driven mood of ‘what a fucking waste’ combined with climate depression, turning into climate action over time. It mystifies me at my core that we, as inhabitants on a planet, have built a capitalistic system in such little support to the ecosystem it stands on.

I feel sad when I open the news seeing what weather- apocalyptic scenarios are happening around the world. And I am saying in my prayers that nothing has happened in Denmark – nothing yet. And I wonder: Why is it that we haven’t implemented the solutions ready-at-hand by now? Who are the hesitant decision-makers that we need to convince that this is something to be dealt with? And that this needs to be dealt with in real-time response?

I read a quote today by Gus Speth saying that ‘the top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy. To deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation – and we scientists don’t know how to do that.

Luckily a lot of other people do. And they just also just need to be mobilized towards climate action. We need the people working in the spiritual and cultural spheres to help people ‘not being reasonable’. We need them to help and start directing their work towards Gaia or ‘Mother Earth’.

Anybody out there wants to help me, make that happen? Of course, something is already stirring in my cauldron=) And I can’t wait to show it to you – soon.

Living In The Midst Of A Rising Climate Movement

Since the danish elections last week, the world has looked greener and more democratic. The night was pretty euphoric to me. Not only did the ‘lefties’ end up gaining majorly to form a government, but the whole election also became centered on climate movement. In fact, the numbers around the elections where just out this morning, and 24 % of the subjects that were spoken about during the elections were climate-related. It seems like our common consciousness and cares for the planet are starting to take center-stage and well.. it is about time. Maybe humanity as a whole is tired of patriarchy and consumption capitalism? I think a part of it is beginning to be, and hopefully, the rest of humanity will follow.

Climate Movement: Then and Now

If I wind back a couple of years, to when I was director for brand and involvement at a think tank in Copenhagen, I decided that we need to do so much more to make people get together to discuss climate movement. We needed to educate, co-create, and communicate together with other organizations in order to start conducting action on climate. To make every person on the planet know that they need to do their share. I used to call it our ‘own little corner of the sustainability movement’. And it was. I started to look out for other climate movement-building initiatives and decided to become a climate reality leader (and I was personally trained in climate issues in June last year in Berlin by Al Gore).

And lately, I have been taken part in klimamarch as well as Fridays for Future in Copenhagen (together with my not-so-mini-geek-anymore). If I look at the UK I can see Extinction Rebellion rising. And in the US you have the Sunshine movement and the new green deal.

I can see very straight parallels to the demonstrations and movement happening in 1968. And some might even call it the 1968 of our time. But it’s with such a bigger impact because of the internet and technology. It’s truly awe-inspiring to be a part of.

But all of these things seem like humanity’s answer to the global meta-crisis. All these movements are a choice towards the planet and towards more people, animals, and planet -caring humanity.

It’s a political move empowered by the people – of Denmark, at least. And I am hoping more citizens in other countries will join us in this move. It’s a wish for a different and sustainable world. And it looks lovely from here =)

Have You Been To A Climate Demonstration Yet?

Yesterday it happened again. I found myself amongst the people in front of the Danish parliament. I was screaming my lungs out for Climate Action and Greta Thunberg. It’s the second time that I have attended a climate demonstration in a couple of months. We want the politicians to legislate for climate and meet the expectations for the Paris Agreement.

It is an important place to make a mark for CARE – the NGO I work with. But also because it’s an important cause for me and my family. My 14-year-old daughter joined me, and had a ball, at the last ‘Fridays for future climate strike in Copenhagen.

Supporting this movement is something I see as a fundamental part of educating and empowering generation Z – they seem to be more activistic and more liberal than the millenials, and we (as parents and humanity) should support them in expressing themselves and the causes they want to stand up for, as much as possible.

Speaking of support, it’s not only for generation Z, You could support the cause too. And you should join us! Because it matters, but also because it feels like you’re a part of something bigger than yourself. I have a feeling that a climate demonstration like this will be portraited in the history books as a global movement rising for the planet – something that is very needed.

I see it as something that has been inspired by other movements through time – such as Martin Luther King’s work for black lives or Nelson Mandela’s work to end apartheid. It really does matter to be activistic and it’s great to see that these movements, through time, moves in waves.

It matters to put pressure on the politicians, the public and the media on a national, European, and global level. Let’s do this!

The Generation With The Most Badass Legacy

This morning the tragic news in the IPCC report came in through the radio. Rockers, we are losing planet earth and faster than we thought – we need climate action and we need it now.

We are already at 1 degree about industrial levels and according to the Paris Agreement, we need to stay below 1.5 degrees to not have a completely devastating effect on humanity.

This has been known for a while but it seems like it’s a bit worse than expected. However, we can still turn things around with radical action – actions that start today. Things ARE changing for the better though, but we don’t only need better we also need faster and more.

Is climate change only working against us? Or could it work for us?

It reminds me of Paul Hawken and Project Drawdown wherein he shares the mindblowing statement along the lines of: ‘We should look at climate change as if it’s something that’s working FOR us and not against us’.

A line that’s SO empowering – that climate change is working for us, making us become our most purposeful and action-driven selves. Transforming the world through our actions.

I hope you can feel the empowerment right now -because I sure can.  What if we started to own this statement, and started to transform the world every day?

What if we could be the generation that transformed the planet through the power we all have, at every given level of society. The opposite is really grim: being the generation that lost planet earth to climate change because of the way our society is structured.

The generation with the most badass legacy

We could become the generation with the most badass legacy. The generation that turns this around. The generation that hands our planet over to our kids and says “We’ve worked it out. You will be alright”, instead of saying “Doom and gloom”.

I know, we can do this together, we can’t lose faith and turn into small depressed cocoons. We need to do way more to transform things in the right direction.

So let’s do this! Let’s become the generation with the most badass legacy!


Meet Personally!

Yesterday, I decided to meet personally with a Swedish friend of mine. We had a mindblowing conversation about what people and businesses are capable of, especially facilitated by technology, and other people.

To give you a bit of a backstory, I first met her when she hired me as a consultant to a Danish insurance company. We had to find out what people were saying about their brand on the internet. She hired me to speak about my book, “Return on Involvement”, at her conference in Stockholm back in 2009.

We’ve been meeting regularly ever since, especially when she was in Copenhagen. We had meetings about her startup and covered a tech conference as a ‘blogger’ producing content.

Anyway, we started talking about climate change, climate action, and political correctness. We also discussed the fact that immediate action is needed when it comes to climate change. Everyone, from the world leaders to the individual Swede (who refuses to fly anywhere and only eats vegan), knows this. Even my mother knows this.

We all know that we have to do something substantial. Soon, a new report from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) will come out.

I am hoping that with our knowledge of the gravity of the situation, there would still be recommendations on how to cut carbon quickly. This would help predict a hockey stick curve (no pun intended to VC’s) of exponential growth when it comes to saving the planet, circular economies, and implementation of renewables (and not just when it comes to returning investment).

However, we ended up with a lot of the ways to approach these global challenges which weren’t so efficient, and sometimes they are even wrong due to lack of accessibility between people.

Personal meetings are always better

Most great things that happened in my life have been because I was lucky enough to meet brilliant people. Not follow them on digital platforms, but actually meet them personally.

Even Steve Jobs agreed that face-to-face meetings are still the way to go for better communication. He encourages people to meet personally and discussed the reasons why in an article published last 2018.

That’s when you spur conversation. That’s when you have your eyes open and hear what other people have to say. You get to ask them about all kinds of different questions. You can even ask them for feedback on your crazy ideas, and maybe even build something cool together.

Amazingly, I and my cool Stockholm friend have kept the conversation going for almost a decade now. I plan to do more of these things such as getting in touch with old friends. Keep conversations going and documenting some of the stories and ideas I find on crossroads between tech, sustainability, impact, and branding on this blog.


Revitalizing The Blog: Life of Henriette Weber Now

First off, I haven’t written in here for years and I have been missing it. If you people have been wondering what Henriette Weber has been up to, well, I’ve been busy taking on fixed-term contracts as brand director and still do.

Having a place to muse on interesting ideas on whatever I see happening in the business world is just what I need. It gives me some concrete “no bullshit” advice with a combination of “whatever is on my mind”. A lot of stuff has happened. I have changed and grown a lot, you probably have too.

I don’t even know if people still read blog posts or articles, but I have a sneaky suspicion that I will need this place again since I would consider myself an entrepreneur again=) This time around I will focus on products instead of clients and services. A fixed-term contract is landed and I am ready to go again. I still have room for another contract so let me know if you want to hire this badass brand director on fixed-term for around 10 hours a week.

I am planning on putting my old stuff online again such as books and freebies. And also, I am gonna be selling speaking gigs and brand workshops.

BUT – more about that soon. For now, it’s simply a small “hi!” from yours truly, Henriette Weber, with a promise of weekly activity in here.

How To Make A Great Information Product

It’s hard to live off your creativity especially when creating ideas for an information product. There are so many things that you take into consideration when you take the job as a creator and decide to stick with it. Not only do you have to create but you also have to convince people that you’re one of the best in the market of creating.

For me, it’s about creating products that need to stand out at first glance. But these products also need to leave an experience of ‘great product’, so the good old viral effect and word-of-mouth sets in and the product starts to sell itself.

The key to a great information product is to be very aware of the benefits and maybe not just listing them, but also communicate them extremely well to different kinds of customers.

You shouldn’t only be looking at the product and how it’s built. It’s even more essential to look at the experience and outcome that your potential customers get by purchasing your product.

You need to focus more on how you want your potential customers to feel after they’ve tried your product.

How do you make sure your product is so great that it exceeds expectations?

Start by building an information product roadmap. A product roadmap you define what processes you want your potential customers to go through. Showing initiatives, processes, and how you want your product to launch, communicate, and succeed. There you will also find your way through pitfalls and discussions.

Make the experience of the information product and the outcome for the potential customer top priority.

Most of the time the key is how much value you can put into an information product. That’s all good and well, but in my experience, one of the things that you also need to do is to keep thinking ‘customer experience’ and ‘outcome’. For example, a lot of information products have a Facebook group where everybody who has purchased the product they meet up and connect afterward.

Sometimes you, as an information product owner,  ask them if you can keep their email so you can send them new information when something new is coming up in the field.

There’s a lot of tricks to information products, but one of the things that have worked for me is to find products that you can benchmark up against. How do they communicate? What do they promise? What is the outcome and how does the product exceed expectations? Why do people refer to them? Do they have an affiliate program or something similar?

You should indulge sometimes when you continuously build your brand online as well as offline. You should do small investments to support your brand. Things such as custom-designed pencils and pens. Postcards. Envelopes.

These are just some examples of small products that may surprise people.

Why? I believe, now more than ever, that you need something analog and real to support your (online) business and brand. I believe that everything needs to be anchored in the real world.  And luckily there are so many creative products you can choose to anchor.

You can choose to buy envelopes and postcards if you agree with this concept but I consider it a good investment to get a designer to set it up properly for you. That way, your target customers would feel more connected personally, having custom-made products specially designed for your business.

And one could argue if it’s to indulge, to send out postcards in envelopes all the time – just postage wise.

Sending out postcards and envelopes might cost you postage, that is a fact. But we can all agree that it feels more personal to receive something in the mail than to simply receive an e-mail or a quick chat.
